  213. Heritage row erupts over kelly gang site

    Swansea Council is to give its final approval of a £50,000 contract for a kelly gang site on the seafloor.

    The council, which owns the site, had initially agreed to pay the price of £90,000 for its new site and build the gang, which will be up against an existing area of sand.

    It then agreed to buy the ground up kelly gang from the owner, as part of the deal that would save £300,000.

    That ground was originally planned by KPMG, who said the kelly gang, which is about 30ft long and 1.4m high, was a potential work of art and could be seen from a wider area.

    But the club were concerned it might interfere with views to the edge of a nearby cliff and therefore wanted its proposal taken to a second, third and fourth round of public consultation.

    A review of public views by the council’s planning committee in late October concluded that public views are not likely to significantly affect the site.

    However, the council will now need permission
